Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai | Is it good?
Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai, commonly known as “Unbreakable Machine doll”. Is an Anime that aired in the fall of 2013. With just about 160k people having the Anime on their MAL lists, I think it’s safe to say I watched this Anime was a ‘well known’ Anime during its airtime. awhile back while I was at my friend’s house and today I’m giving you my review on the Anime.
Episode Count: 12
MyAnimeList Synopsis:
“The Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart was founded alongside the development of “Machinart,” machine magic capable of giving life and intelligence to mechanical dolls subsequently called as “automaton.” Its aim: train skilled puppeteers to control the automatons, as militaries across the globe have begun incorporating Machinart into their armies.
After miserably failing the academy’s entrance exams, Raishin Akabane and his humanoid automaton Yaya must defeat one of the top one hundred students to earn the right to take part in the Evening Party, a fight for supremacy between puppeteers using their automatons. The last one standing is bestowed the title of “Wiseman” and granted access to the powerful forbidden arts.
Thus, Raishin challenges Charlotte Belew and her automaton Sigmund to a duel, but before they even begin, Sigmund is attacked by other students. After saving his opponents from their assaulters, Raishin cancels the duel but is forced to search for a new way to gain access to the Party. Driven by the tragedies of his past, Raishin fights alongside Yaya to rise to the top and claim the title of Wiseman.”
Is it good?
Ehh, I mean, it depends on the viewer. I personally thought it was good, but I also know that some may think it isn’t so good. However, me being me, I will tell you what I thought and let you the reader the be judge 🙂
Art
The art is fairly ‘normal’ by my standards. There are not many things art-wise that stand out for me other than the eyes. The eyes are something different and are something to behold. It’s unique, which adds to the Anime. Another thing that is different is the animations used during the different duels within the Anime. The animations are really well done and do also make up for the ‘normal’ art design that is visible throughout the Anime. Rating: 7/10
Soundtrack
The intro is simply amazing. I have the intro on my phone because I really enjoyed the intro. It’s upbeat and beautifully animated. The outro is really well done too, it’s sort of like this rap kind of deal, but not really. It’s very playful and is also very catchy. Something I get memorized by when I watch the outro is that you see the three ‘sisters’ just spinning around and to me, I think that is really interesting to watch. Finally, the insert sound effects and music played during the Anime, I thought really fit. It definitely added to the moments where it counted the most, which is something all insert tracks should do. Rating: 8/10
Characters
I believe the characters could have been designed better. I felt like this Anime was more of a cluster of clashing personalities all of which something that does not work together. Sometimes there will be times where the characters ‘worked’ but most of the time, it was quite the opposite. In my opinion, I believe the studio should have taken more time to work out the characters in a way that would have bettered the story. The characters were definitely one of the weaker aspects to the Anime. Rating: 6/10
Story
The story was so-so. There weren’t many parts that stuck out at me. Essentially, Raishin who could be seen as both the protagonist and antagonist goes to magic school because he wants to take revenge on the person who murdered his clan. But in terms of his abilities, pretty much slim to none, he is just extremely fit is all and his automaton does all the work. The only problem is that his automaton is a girl who has ‘feelings’ for Raishin. From that point on the story really dips, it turns into a big harem really fast and quickly kicks out the original story and obtains this new one which focuses on another main character. Which also means, Raishin and his automaton, Yaya, are now sucked into this new storyline. Do not worry though, towards the end, the original story does come back (somewhat).
Oh and also, spoilers, during this new storyline, Raishin who was ranked second last in the Academy somehow qualifies for Evening part which is a tournament involving the top 100 puppeteers of the Academy. Someone who is NOT Raishin. Rating: 6/10
Conclusion
To conclude, whether or not this anime is any good is up to you the viewer. I have my own opinions on this Anime and I thought it was alright. I only really liked this Anime because I thought the fight scenes were cool and the ending was left on a cliff hanger. Which is something I love.
