Many of you don’t know this, but I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to watch Anime that air during the current year. The reason being is that I think it takes the fun out of watching Anime when you have to wait for episodes to come out and because I think it’s too much of a hassle trying to keep up with what’s going on in the Anime community.
Obviously, there are certain Animes that I will watch that air during that year but typically I try to stay away from that.
Like all avid Anime watchers, when you see the same kind of plot over and over again, Anime can get really boring. I’ve been experiencing this ‘withdrawal’ for about a year now, which is why I am not an avid Korean show watcher now.
But hey today, I decided it was time to get warmed up to Anime once again. As a guy who hasn’t watched for a good few months, I thought I’d make a splash by breaking my usual norm and watch an Anime that aired during this year, 2017.
Today, I will be giving you my first impressions on the Anime Tsuki ga Kirei.
I’ve seen a total of three episodes as of this blog post and I’m pleasantly surprised. I knew going into this Anime that there would be some high praise, so I went into the show with low expectations.
As for the story, it’s a very normal story, very typical. High school setting, where the two main characters already stand out in the first episode. Their eyes meet and suddenly there is some type of connection between the two.
One more episode in (episode 2), and now the two characters (after overcoming the awkward atmosphere). Now they talk to each other avidly online but not face-to-face. Giving off the impression that they find normalcy through online social media and are scared of face-to-face confrontations. Which is reflects today’s world.
Third episode in, and now one main character may have developed ‘feelings’ for the other main character, which is shown through jealousy close to the middle of the episode. I do not have a problem with the fast character development, as the Anime is only 12 episodes long. I commend it for being able to incorporate real-life social norms, like talking only through ‘LINE’, equivalent to Facebook Messenger, Discord, skype etc.
The Art, is an artform I’ve seen before and is consistent with the studio Feel. The artwork is similar to other Anime they’ve made like, Konobi, and Oregairu. Both of which are also school Anime. The first episode I thought was really pretty, I thought they did a really amazing job showing off the beginning of the school year. With the sakura trees blowing in the wind, their petals flowing gently with the spring breeze and the petals falling into the river below a bridge. Giving off this light ripple effect.
What caught me off guard was the use of 3-D art. They’ve used this a couple of times in the first episode. Whenever you saw a bunch of students walking around in the halls/stairwells, they would be in 3-D. It was very interesting.
As for the sounds/music, background noises are very typical for a school setting. I really do enjoy the OP and ED to the Anime though, both are really good songs and fit the Anime quite nicely.
As I’ve only seen three episodes at the time of this blog, I cannot comment much about the characters in the Anime. We have a male protagonist, who is quite, not academically gifted, and is a very introverted person, who also likes to read and write stories.
On the other hand, there is a female protagonist, who is the top track and field athlete, but also lives a double life because she has anxiety among people she is unfamiliar with and is very quiet and shy.
Side characters have yet to play a big role for me, so I deem them as insignificant. So far I’m impressed, hopefully, the Anime can live up to the expectations I’ve set for it.

The studio really tried a lot of styles in this series from its OP/ED to the designs of the background and foreground in the show – It looks really interesting.
Personally I thought the 3D felt a little rigid, and at some occasionally the character art seems a bit lacking in the lining department }} But they improved along the way up till the final episode (Sorry, art spoilers >.
I definitely felt that rigidness too. I thought it looked really unnatural. On the other hand, I also felt that way when they did that up close shot of the students running on the track in episode 1 I believe
