Anime Burnout | Opinion

Anime burnout — any Anime lover’s worst enemy. I’ve experienced this countless times over the years, and I am sure you have too at some point. Sometimes this burnout may last days, weeks, months or even years. The time when Anime burnout was the worst for me was during 2015 – 2017. During the end of 2015, I began to fill extremely tired and bored of watching Anime.

Prior to this ‘burnout’, I would start and finish an Anime within two days, or sometimes three Anime, depending on the length of the series. Every day, I would watch roughly 6 episodes, this, of course, was dependent on when I woke up and the number of breaks I took in between episodes; but generally speaking that was my daily routine. To be quite honest with you, even today I still feel kind of exhausted watching Anime, I still feel hesitant as to whether or not I feel the drive to watch an episode or start an Anime because I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch another episode the next day.

It sort of came back to me at the beginning of the year, as you could probably tell from my “First Impressions” on the different Anime I’ve done thus far. But even then, I only watched them because they were able to pull me in and make me want more. Something I think many Anime have failed to do. I guess you can say I am waiting for originality or a storyline that I really like; with more and more Anime becoming more alike (in my opinion), various studio trying to find and capitalize on the next big Anime — I feel like the one thing that has been lost is originality.

I am sure everyone knows that feeling. That feeling you get when you’re watching an Anime that you feel is ‘original’ and is something you feel like you’ll enjoy, only to have it turn out to be a “meh” anime because it’s something that you’ve seen before, has a predictable storyline, and isn’t able to pull you in. That is the feeling I have right now whenever I watch an Anime and it’s really bugging me. I’ve tried to offset this feeling by watching other things that weren’t Anime — lately, I’ve been into Korean variety shows. However, as of late I’ve been growing tired of them and have slowly been working my way back into Anime.

Although, as previously mentioned, I’m still a little bit burnt out on Anime, I’ve been fulfilling my need by reading Manga and it’s been pretty fun. I just find it annoying that I’ve been burnt out for so long and I thought I’d tell you guise about it.

Burnout is a normal thing to feel when you watch too much of anything. For me, it’s a good way to figure out which anime I’m actually inclined to watch DESPITE the stress and redundancy.
