#Anime 2012 – My Favourites | Anime Tops

Anime: Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
Genre: ActionAdventureFantasyMagicShounen
Season: Fall 2012

As I’ve mentioned previously the first season of Magi. Is definitely a must watch for anyone getting into Anime for the first time (in my opinion). This Anime had a little bit of everything, action, comedy, story, animation, a wonderful soundtrack, characters you liked and hated. You name it, it pretty much had it. Without a doubt in my mind, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic was an highlight of the 2012.

Dispersed around the world, there are several bizarre labyrinths hiding incredible treasures within them. These mysterious places, known as “Dungeons,” are said to be the work of Magi, a class of rare magicians, who also help people build their empires by guiding them to a dungeon. Djinns, supernatural beings that rule over the labyrinths, grant successful conquerors access to their immense power and choose them as potential king candidates to rule the world.

Having spent life in isolation, Aladdin, a kind and young magician, is eager to explore the world upon finally leaving his home behind. He begins his journey only accompanied by his mentor Ugo—a djinn that Aladdin can summon with his flute. However, Aladdin soon becomes friends with the courageous Alibaba Saluja after causing the destruction of a local merchant’s supply cart. In order to pay for the damages, Alibaba suggests that they attempt to conquer the nearest dungeon, taking the first step in an epic adventure that will decide the fate of the world itself.

Anime: Fate/Zero 2nd Season
Genre: ActionSupernaturalMagicFantasy
Season: Spring 2012

Fate/Zero 2nd Season, has a strong case to be the best season to the Fate/Zero series. Well, to me it is anyway. Created by the studio ufotable. An animation studio known for its god-tier animation skills. Fate/Zero 2nd Season will not disappoint and does extremely well in in regards to its story, character development, art and most importantly the soundtrack. I thought that Fate/Zero 2nd Season had the strongest and best soundtrack for 2012.

Anime: Shinsekai yori
Genre: Sci-FiMysteryHorrorPsychologicalSupernaturalDrama
Season: Fall 2012

Shinsekai yori, in my opinion was the Anime that was the master for Horror and Mystery for the year 2012. It did one thing every episode, and one thing only; it created suspense which kept the viewer on the edge of their seat every time they watched. I personally loved it for that aspect and I think anyone looking for a good Horror Anime will too.

Following a sudden outbreak of psychokinesis in 0.1% of the population, a rapid transformation swept the world. The godlike ability to manipulate matter remotely turned many power wielders to violence, inciting a long period of upheaval. Finally, after a chaotic era shaped by the rise and fall of oppressive regimes, the psychic humans were able to achieve a fragile peace by isolating their society, creating a new world bound by complex rules.

In the town of Kamisu 66, 12-year-old Saki Watanabe has just awakened to her powers and is relieved to rejoin her friends—the mischievous Satoru Asahina, the shy Mamoru Itou, the cheerful Maria Akizuki, and Shun Aonuma, a mysterious boy whom Saki admires—at Sage Academy, a special school for psychics. However, unease looms as Saki begins to question the fate of those unable to awaken to their powers, and the children begin to get involved with secretive matters such as the rumored Tainted Cats said to abduct children.

Shinsekai yori tells the unique coming-of-age story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in the supposed utopia. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and shocking truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new world.

Anime: Psycho-Pass
Genre: ActionPolicePsychologicalSci-Fi
Season: Fall 2012

Psycho-Pass, although is classed under 4 genres, the main genre Psycho-Pass specializes in, is psychological. To me personally, without a doubt in my mind, Psycho-Pass is easily one of the best, if not the best Anime in that psychological genre. I made a blog post on this Anime, I believe a year ago where I raved about this Anime and dove deep into what I loved about it. This anime too, is a must watch for any Anime lover.

Justice, and the enforcement of it, has changed. In the 22nd century, Japan enforces the Sibyl System, an objective means of determining the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for signs of criminal intent, known as their Psycho-Pass. Inspectors uphold the law by subjugating, often with lethal force, anyone harboring the slightest ill-will; alongside them are Enforcers, jaded Inspectors that have become latent criminals, granted relative freedom in exchange for carrying out the Inspectors’ dirty work.

Into this world steps Akane Tsunemori, a young woman with an honest desire to uphold justice. However, as she works alongside veteran Enforcer Shinya Kougami, she soon learns that the Sibyl System’s judgments are not as perfect as her fellow Inspectors assume. With everything she has known turned on its head, Akane wrestles with the question of what justice truly is, and whether it can be upheld through the use of a system that may already be corrupt.

Anime: Sword Art Online
Genres: ActionAdventureFantasyGameRomance
Season: Summer 2012

Although many people nowadays and probably back then really hated on SAO. You cannot say that this Anime was not one of the highlights of 2012. I think the concept in this Anime is not too far off from what could be accomplishable now. Which in itself is pretty dang cool. I personally loved SAO despite all its flaws and that is true love.

MyAnimeList Synopsis
In the year 2022, virtual reality has progressed by leaps and bounds, and a massive online role-playing game called Sword Art Online (SAO) is launched. With the aid of “NerveGear” technology, players can control their avatars within the game using nothing but their own thoughts.

Kazuto Kirigaya, nicknamed “Kirito,” is among the lucky few enthusiasts who get their hands on the first shipment of the game. He logs in to find himself, with ten-thousand others, in the scenic and elaborate world of Aincrad, one full of fantastic medieval weapons and gruesome monsters. However, in a cruel turn of events, the players soon realize they cannot log out; the game’s creator has trapped them in his new world until they complete all one hundred levels of the game.

In order to escape Aincrad, Kirito will now have to interact and cooperate with his fellow players. Some are allies, while others are foes, like Asuna Yuuki, who commands the leading group attempting to escape from the ruthless game. To make matters worse, Sword Art Online is not all fun and games: if they die in Aincrad, they die in real life. Kirito must adapt to his new reality, fight for his survival, and hopefully break free from his virtual hell.

Anime: Hyouka
GenreMysterySchoolSlice of Life
Season: Spring 2012

Hyouka is one of my favourite Anime, without a doubt. One of the many reasons as to why Hyouka is my favourite is because I love the art style that goes with this Anime, I also love the characters, in particular Eru, who is one of the female main characters. Her drive to solve mysteries as it relates to their own club room and the past behind it really makes the story itself extremely interesting. Eru is the spark plug of the Anime and her character alone, in my opinion, is enough to keep you drawn towards this Anime.

MyAnimeList Synopsis
Energy-conservative high school student Houtarou Oreki ends up with more than he bargained for when he signs up for the Classics Club at his sister’s behest—especially when he realizes how deep-rooted the club’s history really is. Begrudgingly, Oreki is dragged into an investigation concerning the 45-year-old mystery that surrounds the club room.

Accompanied by his fellow club members, the knowledgeable Satoshi Fukube, the stern but benign Mayaka Ibara, and the ever-curious Eru Chitanda, Oreki must combat deadlines and lack of information with resourcefulness and hidden talent, in order to not only find the truth buried beneath the dust of works created years before them, but of other small side cases as well.

Based on the award-winning Koten-bu light novel series, and directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto of Suzumiya Haruhi no ShoushitsuHyouka shows that normal life can be full of small mysteries, be it family history, a student film, or even the withered flowers that make up a ghost story.

AnimeAno Natsu de Matteru
GenreComedyDramaRomanceSci-FiSlice of Life
Season: Winter 2012

One thing that I always believed to be true was that the studio J.C.Staff know how to create a story, something that’ll catch your attention, keep you entertained and leave you wanting more. Also, I am a sucker for Romance something this Anime had — which pulled at my heart strings. Ano Natsu de Matteru, like Anohana, is that one Anime I love so much but cannot watch because the ending makes me so sad.

MyAnimeList Synopsis
While testing out his camera on a bridge one summer night, Kaito Kirishima sees a blue light streaking across the sky, only to be blown off the railing seconds later. Just before succumbing to unconsciousness, a hand reaches down to grab ahold of his own. Dazed and confused, Kaito wakes up the next morning wondering how he ended up back in his own room with no apparent injuries or any recollection of the night before. As he proceeds with his normal school life, Kaito and his friends discuss what to do with his camera, finally deciding to make a film with it over their upcoming summer break. Noticing that Kaito has an interest in the new upperclassmen Ichika Takatsuki, his friend Tetsurou Ishigaki decides to invite her, as well as her friend Remon Yamano, to join them in their movie project.

In what becomes one of the most entertaining and exciting summers of their lives, Kaito and his friends find that their time spent together is not just about creating a film, but something much more meaningful that will force them to confront their true feelings and each other.
