Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha | First Impressions

So… What are my initial thoughts about the aime Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha? Good question. To me, it’s sort of like a mixed bag, it’s a bag of candy, which has sweet and sour gummies. Obviously, when I reach into the bag, I hope to pull out a sweet gummy but that sweet gummy only comes up once every 3 sour gummies. You get what I mean?

I want to like and enjoy this anime, I feel like it could be something. It’s not everyday you get to see an overpowered character right off the bat. It isn’t something that happens often enough, and that’s what makes this anime special in my eyes. However, the utilization of the characters and the overall pacing of each episode and the information shown to you the viewer within the span of 24 minutes; will offer you more sour than sweet. As you guys probably know by now, I love anime where we get the background stories of the characters and more importantly, when we get to see them grow in character and personality. That in particular tickles my fancy.

However, with Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha, since we’re given a ton of information all at once we’re not able to have that sort of ‘bond’ with the characters. We know that Anos was the reincarnation of his former self, we know why he wanted a world of peace, but what started the war to begin with? Either I missed that part in the episodes up until now, or there is nothing explaining that point. Why did Anos choose to ‘die’ to the hero, WHO IS THE HERO? Why did Anos became the demon king in the first place? Who are the Demon Emperors, what were their purposes? Who are Misha and Sasha (obviously we’re told they are sisters who originally were one, but in a quest to create a perfect individual they became two). So why were they separate? What was the thought behind splitting Sasha into effectively two individuals, herself and Misha?

Instead of having the answers to all those questions, we have a harem being built around Anos as we focus on who this impostor is, and why they’re trying to erase him from history. But even that, the story behind that all is very poor when animated. I am sure like all things Anime studios have to leave out information to fit their budgets and deadlines, however, it certainly feels like Silver Link. made the decision to leave out a lot of information which could have benefited the overall anime. That is what I feel anyway.

Apart from my gripes with this story, one redeeming aspect this anime does have, well to me anyway, is art design/style. Each character looks shiny (which is weird but looks good) and there is a ton of bright and vibrant colours used throughout the anime. It gives off this sort of magical vibe, which is what I think they were trying to go for, as this anime involves magic. So that’s a plus from me.

My feelings about Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha is rather mixed. There are certain aspects I like, for example, the art and action scenes. But here are parts that suck, like the storyline this anime tries to tell and how it all feels rather rushed. Hopefully it’ll prove as the episodes go by, fingers crossed.
