Episode One Thoughts
A quick aside, what is up with the first episodes of anime being longer than half an hour? This is now the second anime I watched this season that has an opening episode of over 40+ minutes. I’m not too sure whether or not I like or dislike it, however, right now I think I like it really much. Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru‘s first episode really caught my eye because we saw action right away and we saw a pretty cool fight scene happen between ‘Bat’ vs. Siesta.
We have/had a very interesting character named Siesta who was ‘born as a legendary detective’. Not too sure what that means or entails but I’m sure the anime will get into what all that means. We also had an one episode antagonist in ‘bat’ who had this ‘android’ attachment to his ear, capable of killing. It’s similar to something you’d see out of the anime Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu, however, this one is a lot more controlled. We do not know much about this ‘android’ deal but from the clues Siesta had left us, it’s associated with an organization called ‘SPES’. Which like Siesta’s ‘legendary detective’ gig, will also be further explained in future episodes.
The first episode ticked a lot of boxes for me. It had a pretty cool fight scene, one of the characters (Siesta) was extremely interesting and mysterious; I wanted to learn more about her. Then we have a mysterious organization in SPES and whatever they’re doing there with this ‘android’ thing. All of this plus Siesta following Kimi around (even at school) after their little encounter together only to be dragged on Siesta’s continued adventures against SPES — was pretty neat. I’m actually really sad that at the end they reveal that Siesta had already died, which I also assume will be something the anime gets into later on in the episodes.
In a way, episode one presented both the beginning and end of the anime. We meet Siesta in the opening minutes, then we find out that she had already died by the end of the episode. I assume that episodes two through twelve will be filling in the timeline and the events leading up to and after Siesta’s death. That’s my assumption. Reason being, I cannot envision anything other than that because why have an anime titled as “The Detective Is Already Dead”, if you kill off the detective in the first episode? Siesta even felt like she was going to be the best girl too. Shame.
Anyway, great first episode I am looking forward to seeing what happens next and more importantly what happened to Siesta.
