Episode One Thoughts
Since it’s been so long since the first season of Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon aired I will admit, going into the series I wasn’t sure if I was going to remember much of anything. Which at the end of the way works out well for its second season because now I’m going into it with no expectations whatsoever.
In that regard, I was really happy and satisfied with the first season. It was everything I wanted and furthermore, it’s an episode that sets the tone and dynamic for all the future episodes as well. Which is also something I am quite excited about. There were also many aspects of the episode that I enjoyed. For starters, something very minor but for me, is something I consider to be pretty significant. Something I enjoy is continuity. So when we keep the same characters, their personalities, art style etc. Which is what we have here, especially with the person who sings the OP. While the ED song is sang by someone different, the fact that the OP was done by fhána made me happy almost immediately.
The continued lighthearted humor from Kobayashi, Tooru’s continued obsession of being Kobayashi’s maid, and Kanna just existing. Has always been a pairing I enjoyed. The trio is what makes this anime work and you cannot convince me otherwise. You have the weird, obsessive person in Tooru, that one levelheaded character that all anime seem to have in Kobayashi, then you have someone everyone loves in Kanna. All that being said, I am not too sure show I feel about this Ilulu character yet. You can tell that she’s supposed to be the disturbance, she’s supposed to be that character that will shake everything up and flip everything on its head. In that respect, the character Ilulu, has done an exceptional job. In fact, I think she’s doing too much of a good job because I don’t know whether or not I like her. As I am someone who loves continuity and the dynamic that we already have, to have Ilulu there as the disruption has really messed with the flow of everything. But then again, we’re talking about an anime where the majority of the characters are dragons, so it’s to be expected.
Anyway, while the comedy was something I enjoyed. It didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the ANIMATION. Not too sure if many of you know this, but I strongly believe that Kyoto Animation present the cleanest, most stunning and beautiful animation out of all anime studios. I love all their works and I am also happy to see them getting back into the swing of things after everything that has happened to them.
Like come on, look how epic and beautiful this looked. Tooru’s fight scene with the dragon with the disproportionate chest in Ilulu was probably one of the best fight scenes I’ve seen in a long while. This is because the animation and how smooth and clean everything was, not to mention how colourful everything looked as they fought was absolutely stunning. It honestly makes you appreciate the work done by the artists, animators and everyone involved. Kyoto Animation is coming back with a vengeance and man aren’t they hitting hard.
Overall, I am really excited for what is to come with the second season. I’m looking forward to seeing what other problems may arise for our trio and how disruptive of a force Ilulu is going to be throughout the series. I also hope her impact will expand past the first episode (which I’m sure it will). I just hope she won’t be that character that only really talks about her chest, like I get it, but I’m not watching for that. I’m watching for Kanna, Kobayashi and Tooru and their adventure as a weird family. This episode is definitely an A+.
