Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S | First Impressions

Just yes. There was no secret, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S was one of the most highly anticipated anime that was scheduled to air during the summer 2021 season. Without a doubt, it hasn’t disappointed me. As you can probably tell, despite being only four episodes in, I love this anime already. A lot of this has to do with bias because I was already in love with Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon’s first season, which aired way back in 2017. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S has not disappointed, and it’s honestly better than ever.
It’s been a while (one year) since Kyoto Animation had produced something. KyoAni, infamous for its beautiful animation and art style, characters/development and storytelling. They decided that 2021 would be their revenge tour. They’re kicking and punching hard, and I love it. As you can tell, first impressions of Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S have far exceeded expectations.
Let’s talk first and foremost about the OP end ED. “Ai no Supreme (愛のシュプリーム!)” by fhána and “Maid with Dragons❤︎ (めいど・うぃず・どらごんず︎❤︎)” by Super Chorogonzu (スーパーちょろゴンず). These two songs are BOPS. fhána returns with an even better and more catchy OP song, while the ED is sung by our beloved dragons from the anime. “Maid with Dragons” is probably one of the best EDs I’ve heard in a long while. I love catchy and upbeat songs; they really pump me up. Both songs are upbeat and catchy and best exemplifies the anime; definitely an S-tier OP and ED pairing.
Continuity is something that I cherish while watching anime. This is something that Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S abides by, and I love that. The same person who sings the OP, same ol’ characters and quirks, same ol’ voice actors, same ol’ art style. Even though we had a new addition to the case by way of Ilulu, at first, I thought she would be the disruptor; however, I was wrong. Like many other dragons, she has her own quirks and is adjusting to life as a ‘human.’ Ilulu reminds me of Lucoa because the two are voluptuous individuals. Still, she’s also very much a child a heart, so Ilulu connects well with Kanna and Saikawa.
Something else I noticed straight away with the second season of Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon is they’re doubling down on the various quirks of the characters to provide the bulk of the comedy. Which I think is a masterclass idea. When you have well-developed and defined characters like Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon. Then you know without a doubt that the characters will always naturally be funny and entertaining. So, for example, Tooru’s extreme love for Kobayashi is even more pronounced, and Saikawa’s extreme blushes are even more amusing because not only does she have Kanna, but now she has Ilulu.
Overall, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S is everything you would have wanted and then some. KyoAni has really kicked everything up a notch, and it’s really paying off because the second season is hugely entertaining.
Going forward, I hope every episode until its end continues to be highly entertaining and funny. However, I do want to see more of these insane fights because the animation is just beautiful and awe-inspiring. Like honestly, the animation over the past few episodes has been epic. Seeing Tooru’s full power on display and seeing her eyes glow with anger when the guy from the ‘Dragon Slaying Camp’ threatened Kobayashi. Let alone Tooru beating up those thugs because she can. Seeing Ilulu’s power for a brief moment and seeing Elma’s cloak of protection project over the city during Ilulu’s and Tooru’s confrontation was just wow. It’s crazy to think that Slice of Life has better fight scene animations than most action anime. I’m really impressed with it all. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S is definitely a 9/10, A. I want more.
