Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei | Episodes 4 and 5 Review

Okay so, I am back. I started watching Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei, stopped because I wasn’t into it. That being said, since I’ve taken a long enough break from the anime I believe that my mind is now clear. It’s time for finish what I started. Let’s get into what I thought about episodes four and five shall we.
Even though I am still a little frustrated with the fact that we’re trying to squeeze what was effectively twenty-six episodes into something that is half that in thirteen. There was one I did find myself liking a little bit regarding both episodes. It was the fact that episodes four and five did not feel all that individualistic. What I mean by that is that in the original series, we primarily focused on Tatsuya and everything surrounding his character. Since Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei is a spin-off, we’re bound to get a different view on the same story and in this case, episodes four and five focused more on the group around Tatsuya rather than Tatsuya himself.
What got to see what Shizuku, Honoka, and Eimi were up to throughout the events of the original series. We also got to see a more indepth view on the thoughts of Miyuki as well. That being said, while Miyuki’s thoughts offered a different perspective on the events, nothing about it really shocked me. As we know by now, Miyuki and Tatsuya are attached at the hip, so more often than not Tatsuya is on her mind. What episodes four and five did display though was that Miyuki was the extension of Tatsuya’s emotions. What I mean by that is, since Tatsuya is incapable of showing proper emotion, the only one who knows/can imagine what he would be feeling is Miyuki. In a way, Miyuki knows and is able to express to others the emotions that Tatsuya cannot communicate effectively.
While the majority of both episodes were not all that entertaining to me. There was something that did interest me and this is that we get to see a whole new side to the ‘Nine Schools Competition’ Arc. What I assume will be happening is that we’ll be focusing on the lady side of things. Which was a side to the arc that we didn’t really get to explore. The ‘Nine Schools Competition’ Arc was the second best arc behind the ‘Yokohama Disturbance’ Arc as we all know. So I am a little excited but my expectations are still extremely low because I do not want to get disappointed.
The introduction of new characters during one of the better arcs of the original series is something that is extremely interesting. Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei hasn’t been as ‘dark’ as the original series, it certainly isn’t as dialogue heavy as the original series either. So maybe we’ll be getting something that feels a lot more energetic and generally something that doesn’t feel as ‘dark’ as the original. I am cautiously optimistic.
