Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. | E1 and E2: The start of something new.

I would like to get something out of the way, Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. has been an anime I’ve wanted to watch at the start of the season but due to shenanigans in the real world, it just wasn’t in the cards, unfortunately. However, now that things have died now considerably and now that I’ve established a routine, I feel as though I was now able to fit Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. into the rotation.

What shocked me most about the first and second episodes of Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. was just how well animated each scene was. Like it’s extremely well done and you can probably make the argument that it’s one of the best animated for the season. The close-ups of the character’s faces like those shown above look so clean and aren’t something you see in anime. It is like Komi’s character in many ways because like her the art design has two sides. First, you have the simple art, then you have the ultra-dramatic, hyper-detailed art.

Let’s all take a moment to acknowledge that anime similar to Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu always pair what seems to be an ordinary male character with a female character that is highly popular within the school. No matter which direction you turn and regardless of what anime you watch. If the setting is a high school, I think you can generally expect that to be the case nowadays. However, Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu feels like the outlier in that regard because for once the female protagonist cannot communicate (Komi Can’t Communicate) and so the first friend she makes in Hitohito Tadano is the one who will be doing all the talking and translating on her behalf.

Early signs also indicate that Komi and Tadano are going to end up developing feelings for one another. I mean it’s to be expected and people who think otherwise haven’t seen enough anime! However, a moment that I loved the most was when Tadano made the effort to communicate and connect with Komi by writing on the chalkboard. I thought that moment was very heartfelt and very wholesome. This scene, in particular, was very powerful, I couldn’t help but smile.

The concept itself is pretty straightforward and easy to understand. Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. is already a very popular anime amongst the community, but I won’t let the hype the anime has already garnered decide my expectations for this anime. So far so good.
