Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. | E3 and E4: Reactions, Reactions.

Early signs would indicate that the primary source of Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu.’s comedy would be through the character’s interactions and their inability to understand Komi-san. Which at the end of the day makes sense as the anime is called Komi-san can’t communicate. However that being said, I’m not sure whether or not I like that at the moment. Episodes three and four are filled with scenes like the ones pictured above and I will admit, it got pretty boring really fast.

Don’t get me wrong, the supporting cast makes up for Komi’s inability to talk and to adequately express herself. This is a good thing because every character is very colourful, and these personalities are displayed throughout both episodes. In short, these personalities breathe life into each episode which is a good thing. However, there is something about this that doesn’t really stick with me. Maybe it’s because Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. reminds me a lot of Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai even though they’re two entirely different anime.

Because I view Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. and Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai as similar anime, I cannot help but compare the two and I will admit, my biggest dislike about Komi-san right now is that it feels heavily reaction-based. The reactions of Komi-san’s supporting cast are what make the anime entertaining because you’re left with their interpretations of what Komi-san could be saying. Unfortunately, this then leads to them being overly animated in a scene like the ones pictured here. And to be completely honest, these over-the-top overreactions are a style that I don’t particularly like because it makes the comedy feel forced.

Forced comedy = not so great. Then again, who knows maybe as I continue to progress through the episodes, maybe it’ll be a style I’ll come to like. Four episodes in and I don’t know how I feel about Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. It’s still early days, so we’ll see what happens.
