Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. | E7 and E8: Expressions.

I love the art direction of the OP, everything about it is so appealing to the eye. While watching it, I almost wish that Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. was done in a similar way. It’s a unique style and I’m not sure if it would have worked, but nonetheless, a man can dream!

Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. is a very unique anime because we have a female character whose method of communication is through muffled sounds and writing things on whatever she can get her hands on. Maybe it’s how the anime adds emotion to those words that are written down through the OST played during them. Somehow emotion is conveyed through Komi’s sentences and it’s something you wouldn’t expect.

For me, it’s really hard to understand and interpret things such as texts because I read everything without emotion. For example, whenever someone types “LOL” or anything of that sort, you never really know whether or not they’re laughing or if they’re just saying that to make it seem like what you said was entertaining to them. Like I said, maybe it’s the OST playing during these heartfelt moments that add the emotional touch that can sometimes be lacking. It’s just weird feeling and understanding the emotion portrayed through Komi’s words and it’s something I really like.

That being said, despite being eight episodes in. I’m not sure how I feel about the anime just yet. The reason why I say this is because Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. is considered more reactionary. This is also something I’ve mentioned before. I’m not sure if that is the sort of style that I like yet. When you have a main character who doesn’t usually talk, the other characters have to make up for it. How do they make up for it? By interpreting Komi’s silence to whatever suits them at that moment in time. Is that something I like? Not particularly, no. To me, it makes the episode feel a little disorderly and as someone who likes continuity and some form of order to an episode (because it makes things easier to follow for me) having none of that is a little disappointing.

Furthermore, both episodes had an abundance of ‘text bubbles’, which are these blocks of text that provide context or explain what is currently having. In this case, these text bubbles we used in place of Komi talking. I will admit, this wasn’t something I liked because you would see these text bubbles happen during scenes where literally nothing was happening and when no one was saying anything and to me, that was a little annoying.

However, despite my criticisms, I do feel like Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. has been improving ever so slightly and has slowly started to grow on me. I think that has to do with Komi growing more and more confident in herself and her surroundings. That’s definitely something I have enjoyed, seeing Komi grow little by little each episode.
