Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru | Episode One: Horimiya vibes

Alright, here we are once again, a new season, a new anime. Today’s anime of choice is Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru. I will admit, this was something I, like many others, have had their eyes on. I am also half tempted to read the manga, but I will not do that just yet. I’ll wait until we’re further into the anime. But anyway, allow me to share my thoughts on the first episode of Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru.

Given the title of today’s blog, the first episode of Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru definitely gave me Horimiya vibes. I say this because we have two characters who are polar opposites of one another coming together. First, we have Marin Kitagawa, a beautiful and attractive high school student, who like Hori, is someone who was basically friends with everyone, loud and outgoing and also very popular. Then we have Wakana Gojou, who is the complete opposite. He’s someone who keeps to himself and is very self-conscious. This is similar to how Izumi.

How do Kitagawa and Gojou meet? It looks like the sewing machine is something highly valued by both of them. Gojou enjoys making the clothes for Hina dolls, while Kitagawa uses sewing for her cosplay. The only problem for Kitagawa is that she cannot properly make clothes. But, on the other hand, Gojou knows how to do this because he makes clothes for his Hina dolls. So there you have it, the premise of the anime.

So what did I think about episode one? It was a good introductory episode for sure. However, Kitagawa as a character sticks out the most. While watching, I couldn’t help but think to myself “Kitagawa, sure sticks out”. You could tell that the studio made it a point to make her look different and more attractive than the other characters of the anime. Then you Gojou who when compared to Kitagawa from a character design standpoint looks… normal.

Anyway, they both have something they’d like to keep secret from the general public in both cases. I would assume that Kitagawa would like to keep her cosplay adventures as tight-lipped as possible. As for Gojou, his reason is a lot more, I guess depressing, if that’s the right word. Obviously, when you’re bullied because something you’re passionate about, other people see as ‘weird’. You tend to be more shut-in and unapproachable. You can tell that Gojou while still very much passionate about Hina dolls, he’s very self-conscious about this hobby and is scared of what other people will think of it. Luckily for him, Kitagawa doesn’t seem to care.

Despite the minimal information given to us in this episode. I do expect things to ramp up significantly. I assume as time goes on, Kitagawa is going to find ways to open up Gojou. She’ll help him to become more comfortable in his own skin and I’m sure it’ll be the same thing for Kitagawa. I know how this story works and I know the path that it may go on. While the premise is something I haven’t seen before, the storyline is something I’ve witnessed countless times, albeit in various forms. So am I expecting a lot? No, and I think that’s a good thing.

Overall, I am looking forward to what happens next.
