Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san | Episode two: Romcom

Episode two of Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san is a prime example of your typical romance comedy. When it comes to our two characters, Shikimori and Izumi their relationship for the most part is something you’d expect from an anime that is classified as a romcom. I knew before jumping into the anime that I shouldn’t be expecting a whole lot from the anime.

I will admit that there were times when I found myself cringing a little bit because some of their interactions were a little too gushy and a little too lovey-dovey. That was something I found myself having a little difficulty watching because it was one of those “eeeeeek” moments for me. Shikimori and Izumi are characters who are in that ‘honeymoon’ phase that we’re all too familiar with. They’re falling head over heels for one another, they cannot help but think of one another. You know, the sorts of thing you’d expect from a first time couple.

Also as a quick aside, I find it mildly interesting that the unluckiest of people (Izumi) is able to land someone as popular and well liked as Shikimori. It’s just one of those things where in anime, anything is possible.

Now, time to move into what I didn’t like about the second episode. As previously mentioned, I thought the episode itself was a little too lovey-dovey. I think once you’re cringing then that is a sign that what’s being shown isn’t really to your liking. While I understand that in the world of anime, you’re bound to have unrealistic moments, especially in regards to relationships. However, that being said, when it comes to the lovey-dovey I prefer a little something a little more subdued. A good example of a more subdued relationship would be Horimiya, especially if you’re someone who has read the manga. Then you know what I’m talking about.

Something else I didn’t like about the second episode was that the supporting cast weren’t all that involved. This is a concern for me because I don’t think that our protagonists (Shikimori and Izumi) are a strong enough pairing to really make this anime worth watching, especially for me. I value a strong supporting cast, whenever the primary focus is centered on two characters only. This is because it takes the pressure off the main characters, a good supporting cast is also able to provide some relief whenever needed. It also allows the anime to have a ‘new look’ even if it’s for one episode. That being said, we’re only two episodes in out of twelve or so, so there’s still a lot of time for things to happen.

Overall, I’d say that the second episode of Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san wasn’t as good as it could have been. Looking back, I definitely think there were more things that I didn’t like than I there was things I enjoyed. But that’s okay (hopefully).
