Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. 2nd Season | Episode three: A supporting cast episode.

Episode three of Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu. 2nd Season was a supporting cast episode. Let me tell you about it.

While Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san is an example of not having a proper supporting cast, the second season of Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu is the exact opposite. With regards to the third episode of the season, it very much felt like Komi-san took a backseat. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because Komi-san is what I consider to be a more ‘reactionary’ type of character because she’s communicate with her peers. So the anime replies on everyone else to pull the anime through and to make the show enjoyable.

Which is what they did in this particular episode. If it weren’t for the supporting cast and all quirky and weird each one of them are. I do not think this episode would have been all that entertaining. That has been one of my criticisms about this anime for a long time. I believe that Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu relies more on its supporting cast, which in my eyes overshadows the main characters.

That being said, I haven’t read the manga, so I’m not sure what’ll happen next. But I can only assume that the reason why we see the supporting cast take on such a big role in the anime is because they’re support to act as encourage for Komi-san to communicate. Komi-san as a character right now is like a diamond in the rough, she’s still warming up, she’s still trying to get used to ger surroundings. Everyone is doing their part to make Komi-san as comfortable as possible (or uncomfortable as possible given the awkwardness at times) so that eventually Komi-san will be able to express herself with words other than through reactions.

How long will that take? That’s the biggest question. For me, I would like to see that happen soon-ish because I would like to see Komi-san’s character develop at a faster rate. As of right now, it just feels like everything is on hold, especially with the character progression. Honestly, I would enjoy this show a lot more if it sped up a little bit. I want to get to the part where Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu stakes its claim. All this slow build up is something I’m not interested in. Which is weird because I like a gradual build up, but I believe that this time is different.

Hopefully we see that shift sometime in the near future.
