Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Ultra Romantic | Episode 4: Exam Time.

Exams in high school anime are always this big event. During the fourth episode of Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Ultra Romantic, this proves to be the case. However, this stressful period came with a twist.

You cannot have a high school setting if you don’t have exams. You also cannot have an exam period episode without it being the most dramatic thing imaginable. Which is the case here with episode four. When you go to the prestigious Shuchiin Academy, being at the top academically matters to the majority of the students there.
However with the title of “Ultimate Romantic” in the title, you can tell that the third installment in the Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai series will be more geared towards romance, which also so happens to the be the case for episode four. I mean, you could tell that the third season was going to focus more on the romance side of things, I knew that it was going to eventually happen. As someone who has read the manga, the fact that it’s slowly starting to happen is making me real excited.
Despite this excitement, however, I thought episode four was a little bland to say the least. I mean we do have Ishigami starting to show more emotion. Which is great because he’s been a, for lack there of a better term, depressed character. So seeing him start to show some positive emotion is nice given his past. Apart from that though, what did episode four have to offer? I’ll be honest, not much.
We still are subject to the same type of comedy and quirks of the characters. A lot of what made this anime great and entertaining to watch, all those elements are present in this episode. But I cannot help but feel as though something was lacking and I can’t figure out what that is.
In some ways, Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Ultra Romantic has fallen a little short of my expectations. Which is fine because I have unrealistically high expectations for this series as a whole, having read the manga. So a part of me is wishing that we progress through the chapters a little more quickly than where we’re currently at. But you know, beggers cannot be choosers.
Despite an episode that I thought was a little bland, I’m still excited for what is to come and hopefully what I think will be adapted will be present in the anime. Fingers crossed!
