Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru | Episode One.
Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru reminds me of a ton of anime. First and foremost, the english title “When Will Ayumu Make His Move?” reminds me of Kaguya-sama’s english title “Kaguya Wants to be Confessed To”. That being said, I feel as though Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru is an anime that draws its inspiration from many other anime because you can make various links to a ton of romcoms.

Is the ability to draw many comparisons a good or bad thing? I think it can be both. It can be good because having similarities with other anime I’ve enjoyed may cause you to find Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru more entertaining. But it can also be a bad thing because being the same like all the rest isn’t good if you want to stand out in a genre that is oversaturated with anime.
What did I think of the first episode?
The characters are interesting, both Ayumu and Urushi know that they like each other. However, similar to Shirogane-kun and Kaguya, they want the latter to make the first move. Original? No. However, atleast they know they like each other.
It’s also not everyday that you watch an anime where shogi is made as to the primary talking point. The only connection I can make with that is 3-Gatsu no Lion, which is the complete opposite of Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru.
I think that for Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru to be worth while, it’ll need something that helps the anime standout, even if it’s something subtle. Yeah the characters seem interesting but basing this off the first episode alone, I do not think they have enough to them to make the anime worth watching. That’s the problem with many romcoms nowadays, more often than not, they’re all the same. The characters will always be similar to one another and the story is something easily predictable.
What’s a different for Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru is that both Ayumu and Urushi are very straightforward with one another. They tease each other openly and say things you wouldn’t normally say to a friend, especially one you have feelings for I thought that made for some pretty funny scenes, I especially liked how forward Urushi has been. I like those kinds of characters, straightforward but is easily flustered.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing what becomes of this anime.
