The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten

When it comes to fairytale romances, there’s nothing more fairytale like than Otonari no Tenshi-sama ni Itsunomanika Dame Ningen ni Sareteita Ken (The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten). Which, depending on who you are and what your preferences are this anime may not be your cup of tea. Having had time to properly disgust everything, I do not think that this idealistic, fairytale romance was for me.

Allow me to explain why

I think it’s just too perfect, which is weird to say because it is an anime. In a space where anything and everything can be portrayed, done or turned into something idealistic. You would think that having a perfect fairytale romance would be something I’d be okay with but it turns out that it’s not.

You know me, I’ll always mention how romance anime will always be a preference of mine. I’ve seen a ton, but after watching The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten I’ve realized that I find more entertainment in romance anime that feel more realistic and reasonable. Like Horimiya for example (which is getting another installment, something I’m excited about).

Here with The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten you already have a defacto couple, they do everything just short of living and sleeping together, but otherwise, they’re essentially a couple. I think that’s what bothered me most about the anime. The fact that they did everything you’d see in a typical romance anime, apart from actually being a couple. To me, that didn’t really make sense because no one is actually that close and is not already a couple. Like why go through the motions of doing ‘couple-like’ things and experiences and not be a couple?

Furthermore there was little to no conflict in the anime. Which is a big negative for me because I believe for a story to be atleast decent you need to have a conflict. Let’s be honest, that scene with Mahiru’s parent was nothing to the overall story, nor was all the guys bringing down Amane in the last episode. Those were minor, insignificant conflicts that were pretty boring to say the least. I don’t think they added much to the anime at all.

Not to mention, each episode felt as though I was watching the same thing or something similar every time. It’s always the two (Mahiru and Amane) chilling at Amane’s apartment as they chat away on his couch. Which in itself is very boring to say the least.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten lacked quite a bit of things that would have made the anime a little more enjoyable. The biggest for me being an imperfect characters, Mahiru and Amane were just too perfect and they fit too well together. They lacked any real flaws and that was a big turn off because how else are we supposed to see our characters development?

The repurposing of the same couple of scenes each episode, where the characters do the same sort of thing all over again for another twenty minutes or so is also very disappointing and made each episode feel the same. In short, each episode lacked variety to keep things interesting. With the icing on the cake being that there literally was no real conflict anywhere throughout the anime was also very frustrating.

Was The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten worth the hype, in my opinion, I do not think so.
