Non Non Biyori Nonstop | Episode 2 and 3 Review

I enjoy playing catch up, it’s always fun. Now that I am here and ready to go, it’s time to binge Non Non Biyori Nonstop. Let’s get ready for a marathon.

Episode TWO Thoughts

Renge is honestly the best. How can you not like her? She’s interested in everything, utterly determined in whatever she does, and is also an airhead. Kotori Koiwai‘s voice acting as Renge is as always, exemptional. Who would have thought watching our main cast garden for almost 10 minutes would be so entertaining. For me the best part of that segment was Renge because her fascial reactions were over the top and exaggerated. As someone who adores Renge as a character, seeing her enjoy herself more than anyone else who helped garden brought joy to me.

I thought it was nice that towards the latter half of the episode, we got to learn a little bit about Hotaru. I didn’t know (or failed to remember), that she’s someone who still liked being babied by her parents. It was cute, yet funny because when Konomi notices her. Hotaru’s freak out was very entertaining; especially when Konomi and Komari tried babying her too. Non Non Biyori Nonstop is in many ways, similar to Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? Bloom. We have a lot of different personalities in that each character plays a particular part in the episodic episode. In the grand scheme of things, episode two didn’t have anything significant, there wasn’t really anything worth noting; but the use of characters throughout the 20 minutes filled the space so well that you wouldn’t have noticed that in reality not much happened.

The ability to do that, only through the use of characters is something I will always enjoy.

Episode THREE Thoughts

I thought episode three was a nice episode, in large part because it didn’t contain our large main cast. Instead it focused primarily on two individuals, Hikage and Natsumi and their relationship with one another. It’s your typical ‘older sister, younger sister’ dynamic even though they’re not related. What’s interesting about this relationship is that they’re both follow the same wave length. You know, whenever someone has the same vibe as you then you’ll always enjoy hanging out with them. Which is the case for Hikage and Natsumi, as indicated in their younger years, how they used to play with each other but also get into ‘fights’.

This little arc provided something that that you’d normally wouldn’t see. Especially with regards to a Slice of Life, a little bit of background between a member of our main cast (Natsumi) and Hikage, a member of the supporting cast. However apart from that, episode three is similar to episode two, not a lot happens during the episode but it felt like everything happened.

I didn’t really notice that until I started writing this blog. I guess that goes to show how great Non Non Biyori Nonstop is and how the Non Non Biyori series has mastered the art of making it all about the characters. Characters that viewers like me have grown to love, to the point where we no longer need an episode with a lot happening; all we need is character interaction to fill us with entertainment.

I’m trying to like it. It feels like the purest slice of life one could possibly create. I’m just not getting into the characters.

Yeah, I definitely have that problem from time to time.
