Episodes Three and Four
Episodes three and four, are like the previous two episodes. Night and day. Episode three was a pretty bad episode, while episode four was in more ways than one, was better than the previous episode. I don’t know why that’s the case, but it is what it is. I’ve noticed that about this series, it’s every good episode is followed up by a bad episode. Personally I don’t like that sort of trend because it’s very unpredictable, you never know what you’re going to get. You’re either going to enjoy watching the episode or not.
Much like episode two, episode three was a continuation with Nino being ultra rude and weird and I personally didn’t like that one bit. So I won’t really comment on it too much, however, Nino spiking Futaro’s drink was a really scummy and shitty thing for her to do. Obviously what Futaro did was no better either, faking his identity for Nino. He should have gone with option A and told her that he was the person she met at the school camp fire. But that doesn’t justify Nino going to the extreme of spiking his drink because she saw through his lie. I mean, let’s be real here, if she knew all along why not just tell him instead of spiking his drink then telling him as he’s about to pass out. Makes no sense to me and all the more adds to why I dislike Nino the most out of all the sisters.
My biggest annoyance is that since Nino is always on the defense, whenever she speaks her character comes across as very snobby and annoying. You try to listen to her, you try to listen to what she has to say and her reasons for acting the way she did. However, all you can hear in her voice is annoyance. Which in turn makes you extremely annoyed that she’s being annoying.
Episode four shared a similar vibe to the midterm episode in the first season. They all ended up failing (again) but this time, Futaro learning from his mistakes quit before the final exams instead of after. Meaning no one was there to actually stop him from going through and quitting. However, being only four episodes in it wouldn’t make any sense to end it there right? Of course it wouldn’t! We have another eight episodes to fill. Watching the five sisters do everything in their power, this time as a group to ensure that Futaro would remain their tutor was very admirable and very heartfelt. Did they all have to jump into the river? Probably not, but it does reinforce that they’re all in this together and this (Futaro being their tutor) was something they all agreed upon and wanted to happen and continue happening.
In a perfect world, I would have liked both episodes to have been equally entertaining but because of factors that’s not the case. That being said, I am optimistic for what is to come, skimming through the various reviews that were made for 5-toubun no Hanayome ∬ (in particular the rating), the second season seems to be well received. So I hope the best is yet to come.
