Episode Two Thoughts
So unfortunately, because I thought that the first episode of Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san was so bad. I decided to read the manga instead; and by read I mean gloss over it. After catching up, I am now more than willing to give the adaption a shot, a new lease on life. However, that being said, I am still approaching this anime with very low expectations because adaptations will always miss something, as was the case with Horimiya. Let’s hope that if anything has to be left out, it isn’t anything that would add to the overall vibe and feel Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san is going for.
You can definitely draw comparisons between Hana Uzaki and Hayase Nagatoro. They both enjoy hanging out with their “Senpai” and by hanging out, I mean annoying the heck out of them in their own ways. Half way through Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai! you could tell that the two main protagonists (Uzaki and Sakurai) had developed feelings for each other, Uzaki’s feelings being more pronounced than Sakurai. I have a feeling that the same sort of deal is in store for Nagatoro and Hachiouji. While there may be similarities, there are also extreme differences, both in character design and personality. Nagatoro seems a lot more perverted and assertive while Uzaki, in my opinion, is neither of those two things.
I would like to mention that Nagatoro is one very assertive individual for someone who is a a first-year in high school. She’s that perverted person who is very open about it and Hachiouji is that person who is also perverted but does everything possible to hide it from everyone because he’s embarrassed about it. In that regard, I think while our two main characters seem like polar opposites of each other on the outside, on the inside they are very much the same.
I thought that episode two was 100x better than the first episode. Unlike the first episode, episode two did get a chuckle out of me. Does it help that I quickly dabbled into taking up the manga? Without a doubt, I think that helped. Everything about episode two can fall in line with the following:
“If a boy teases a girl, then that means they like them”. I am sure everyone knows what that means, it’s something that can be deemed as truth. However, instead of the boy teasing the girl, it’s the other way around. It’s the girl teasing the boy. It clicked for me when at the end of the episode Hachiouji questions why Nagatoro only acts the way she does around him and not around others. The personality and reactions we see whenever Nagatoro was with Hachiouji were not there when she was on that double date. Her personality then was rather cold, and quiet. It can be one of two things, either she didn’t like the boys she was on the double date with, or she only finds interest in Hachiouji. I’m guess in the latter.
Overall, episode two was way better. The humour is definitely something I am not used to just yet nor do I know if it’s something that I find entertaining. We’ll have to see as the episodes go by, right now it’s a B-.
